Let me first tell you, why the switch to natural toothpaste is so important: the oral mucosa absorbs substances very easily and the maintenance of a healthy bacterial balance in our mouth is crucial to our overall health, not just to the health and look of our teeth. Conventional toothpastes make advertising for their antibacterial properties. But in fact, we do not need that and the thing is, that the use of such might destroy the good bacteria we have in our mouth so that the bad ones take the lead. So here are my personal favorites for you to try out which will make the switch as easy as possible 🙂
Logodent creates a good set of natural tooth care products with a variety of flavors and specifities. I have tried the menthol-free and the one for naturally white teeth.
The “whitening” toothpaste has a peppermint taste, is vegan and does not contain fluoride. The ingredients look like this:
Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Hydrated Silica, Xylitol, Betaine, Algin, Xanthan Gum, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract*, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract*, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Alcohol denat.*, Aroma (Flavor)**, Limonene**, CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide)
The silica and the titanium dioxide work as natural and gentle abrasives and they do not accumulate in the environment as the plastic particles from conventional toothpastes do.
The menthol-free toothpaste might taste a little funny to some as it contains sea salt which is great for the gum but makes it unappetizing to some people. It also contains rosemary and witch hazel, echinacea and salvia which are amazing for gum health.
Aqua (Water), Sorbitol, Hydrated Silica, Maris Sal (Sea Salt), Algin, Commiphora Abyssinica Resin Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Leaf Extract*, Echinacea Pallida Extract*, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil*, Salvia Triloba Leaf Extract*, Sucrose Laurate, Glycerin, Aroma (Flavour)**, Alcohol denat.*, Sodium Hydroxide, Limonene**
I would use them in rotation to have the benefits of both and give my teeth a break from the abrasives from time to time.
Two other favorites of mine are pictured below. Weleda is the more pricey option if you compare the prices to conventional toothpaste but they have amazing natural and herbal ingredients. My all time favorite though is the Lavera toothpaste just because it is affordable and resembles conventional pastes in taste and feeling but has very healthy ingredients.
My newest favorite is a toothpaste from Eco Cosmetics which contains black cumin. This ingredient adds another great health-improving benefit to your dental hygiene and it tastes amazing. I don’t know why black cumin isn’t used more often in toothpastes, I only see benefits here.
The ingredients are so so good! Read for yourself – black cumin extract is actually the third ingredient in the INCI list which means it is the third most abundant in the product!
Have you made the switch yet? Most of them are available in drug stores like dm so there is no excuse 😉
